B-Scan Ultrasound

A B-Scan Ultrasound is used to produce cross-sectional view of the eye and the orbit.

The B-Scan ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to image the back of the eye then reflections of the sound waves then form a picture of the structure of the eye.

This is useful particularly when structures at the front of the eye prevent adequate visualisation with standard imaging techniques. A B-Scan ultrasound may also be done when there are severe cataracts or other eye conditions like lid problems that make normal examinations difficult. The B-Scan ultrasound may also help in diagnosing retinal detachment. Your eye doctor may also order eye studies if you are experiencing unexplained problems with your eyes or if you have recently sustained an injury or trauma to the eye area.

The B-Scan ultrasound scan does not use radiation and is safe in pregnancy and is useful to detect disorders such as posterior vitreous detachment, retinal detachment, retinal tear, vitreous haemorrhage and tumours of the eye.

This is a quick and painless procedure that is not associated with serious side effects or risks.

We use the latest Aviso digital technology B-scan ultrasonography machine from Quantel.
